Bathtub Racing

Bathtub racing started in Nanaimo, British Columbia and involves the use of a bathub boat. The first races began with the "Nanaimo to Vancouver Great International World Championship Bathtub Race" in 1967. The idea was conceived to showcase Nanaimo to the world. Frank Ney, Nanaimo's Mayor at the time, was an avid participant and would regularly dress as a pirate and tour the town and surrounding communities. Frank Ney was one of the largest supporters and promoters of the annual race until his death in 1992. Until the 1990s, tubbers raced from Nanaimo to Vancouver's Kitsilano Beach, the race now involves a course beginning in Nanaimo Harbour and ending at Departure Bay. The race is held the last weekend of July every year. Because of the race, Nanaimo is sometimes known as the Hub, Pub, and Tub city.

Other cities now hold bathtub races, but the Nanaimo event continues to be the most widely known.

Bog Snorkeling

Bog Snorkeling is a sporting event that consists of competitors completing two consecutive lengths of a 60-yard water filled trench cut through a peat bog, in the shortest time possible. Competitors must wear snorkels and flippers, and complete the course without using conventional swimming strokes, relying on flipper power alone. Wet suits are not compulsory, but are usually worn. Recently doctors have raised concerns about the health effects of this sport.

World Bog Snorkelling Championship

The World Bog Snorkeling Championship takes place annually every August Bank Holiday at the dense Waen Rhydd peat bog, near Llanwrtyd Wells in mid Wales, and was first held in 1985. This years event is sponsored by London Based IT consultancy SPMK Ltd.

Phillip John of Bridgend was the champion male bog snorkeller for the years 2002 to 2004 inclusive, but was defeated by Ian Hawkes on August 29, 2005. Abigail James was the champion female bog snorkeller, and Gareth Madelin the champion junior bog snorkeller, for the years 2003 and 2004.

Other bog snorkeling events take place, particularly in Wales, including the associated mountain bike bog snorkeling (where competitors must ride through the bog on specially prepared mountain bikes), and the Bog Snorkelling Triathlon.

Proceeds from the championship go to a local charity each year. Charities include the Cystic Fibrosis Trust (2005), Motor Neurone Association (2006).

Camel Wrestling

Camel wrestling is a sport in which two male dromedary camels wrestle in response to a female camel in heat being led before them. It is most common in the Aegean region of Turkey, but is also found in the Marmara and Mediterranean regions of that country. There are an estimated 1200 camel wrestlers (or Tulu) in Turkey, bred specially for the competitions.

A camel can win a wrestling match in three ways: By making the other camel retreat, scream, or fall. The owner of a camel may also throw a rope into the field to declare a forfeit if he is concerned for the safety of his animal.

Camels wrestle with other in their same weight class. Camels have different tricks, and contest organizers match camels with different skills. Some camels wrestle from the right and some from the left; some trip the other with foot tricks ("çengelci"), and some trap their opponent's head under their chest and then try to sit ("bağci"); some push their rivals to make them retreat ("tekçi").

A camel wrestling event involves considerable pomp and ceremony. The camels get decked out, and participate in a march through town followed by musicians on the day before the event. The actual wrestling can be somewhat underwhelming to someone not familiar with the intricacies, although onlookers must often flee from an oncoming camel that is retreating in defeat from his opponent.

In the heat of the tournament, camels spew foamy saliva in their excitement. Additionally, camels are retromingent animals, and so spectators would be advised to beware not only of flying saliva but of flying urine as well.

Popularity of the sport is declining, as the relative costs of caring for such an animal rises, as well as due to concern for animal welfare.

Cheese Rolling

The Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling and Wake is an annual event held in May at Cooper's Hill near Cheltenham and Gloucester. Competitors race down the hill after a Double Gloucester cheese, and the first person over the line wins the cheese. In theory, competitors are aiming to catch the cheese, but since it has a second's head start and can reach speeds up to 70mph (enough to knock over and injure a spectator as it did in 1997), this rarely occurs.

Due to the steepness and uneven surface of the hill there are usually a number of injuries, ranging from sprained ankles to broken bones and concussions. A first aid service is provided by the local St John Ambulance (Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud Divisions) at the bottom of the hill, with a volunteer rescue group on hand to carry down to them any casualties who do not end up at the bottom through gravity. A number of ambulance vehicles will attend the event, since there is invariably at least one and often several more injuries requiring hospital treatment. Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling has been summarized as "twenty young men chase a cheese off a cliff and tumble 200 yards to the bottom, where they are scraped up by paramedics and packed off to hospital".

The last race of the 2005 event was delayed while the ambulances returned from the hospital, all of them having been required to transport casualties from previous races. Nevertheless, it was one of the most popular events in recent years, with many more participants than were able to run in the four races.

Accurate information is hard to come by, but the tradition is at least 200 years old. Suggestions are made that it may date back to Roman times, or may have been a pagan healing ritual, but there is no evidence for this.

The Cheese Rollers is also the name of the nearby pub about half mile stroll from Cooper's Hill. Competitors will frequent this venue for some pre-event Dutch courage or discussion of tactics, and after the event for some convalescence.

Cockroach Racing

Only in Australia would they celebrate their national holiday by racing cockroaches.

Yes, that's right I'm talking about those pooey brown, hairy legged, skin crawling, under the fridge indulgers and lights out kitchen partiers that infest much of the land Down Under.

On a day when most countries would be flag raising, parading the streets and celebrating their nationhood Australians head to the pub for some serious cockroach action.

A sport that has become a bit of a tradition.

At the Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane they've been racing the insects every hot summery January 26 for the past 21 years. It all started in 1982 when two barflies began arguing that the roaches from his part of town were the fastest in Brisbane. They tested their alcohol-fuelled convictions in a parking garage, the bar crowd enjoyed it and thus the races were born.

Now described as "the greatest gathering of thoroughbred cockroaches in the known universe" the event has not come of age that much. There's a bit of sponsorship, TV cameras, microphones and live bands but much of the tradition has remained the same.

The beer comes out, the water guns, the Australian hats with the dangling corks, the tattoos and all the best of Australiana. It's Australian Bogan culture at its understated best.

Midday arrives and the first set of races is due to start, although these are considered mere crowd pleasers and warm-ups for the 13 more to come. The crowd gathers around a boxing style ring. Anticipation builds as the bagpipe band marches in with much aplomb to announce the arrival of the cockroaches. These are displayed by the headrace steward in a clear plastic lunch container, which he displays to various members of the public, holds proudly above his head or occasionally shakes to rattle them up.

The stage is set for a good race. For a lot of the roaches it's their first time out from under the fridge so nerves are expected and anticipated. Some of them never overcome their stage fright and remain frozen in the middle of the ring. The shaking of the box is one way to alleviate this.

The stewards position themselves around the ring. The head steward removes the lid of the box and turns it upside down on the ground. The cockroaches mill over each other, still trapped inside.

Each cockroach is introduced as is any competitor in major sporting events. The roach backers cheer and spray their rivals with water, beer and any other substance they can locate. Others rise in Mexican waves, chant, or scream. It's a hubbub of noise and excitement.

When the head steward finally releases the cockroaches it's the climax. The cockroaches scramble and scuttle in every direction. The stewards dive all over the mats to locate the first three. Inevitably a few manage to get past them and escape into the screaming and recoiling crowd in the front rows.

It's seconds of confusion, then the winners are announced and their human representatives come out to cheers or booing from the crowd. Some bring water pistols and gun down other spectators, others carry their XXXX (Queensland beer) or VB's (another Australian beer) with them to stand on the podium in singlets and flip flops / thongs (Australians never dress up, not even for cock roach races), and others run laps of honour around the 4m wide ring.

Fruitcake Tossing

What do you do with that nasty fruitcake Grandma Glenda with the Elvis sideburns sends you every Christmas? You can take it to the Great Fruitcake Toss. Held every first week in January since 1995, all come not to pay homage to the fruitcake, but to hurl, dissect and destroy the damn things, not to mention make fun of the people gave them to you.

You can compete in any number of events. There's tossing (by hand), launching (by catapult), and hurling (by any other method); a Fruitcake Derby (fruitcakes with wheels); a Fruitcake Art Show (recent entries have been a stoplight and a Chia Pet); the Farthest Traveled Fruitcake (fruitcakes have recently arrived from Hong Kong and New Zealand); and the obligatory Fruitcake Relay. A mere $5 will grant you entry into all events you wish to compete in. But remember, this is a BYOF party.

For the last nine years about 500 people have shown up in Manitou Springs, Colorado each January for the Great Fruitcake Toss. "We encourage the use of recycled fruitcakes", says Leslie Lewis of the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce. The all-time Great Fruitcake Toss record is 420 feet.

Lawnmower Racing

Lawn mower racing is a form of motorsport where competitors race modified lawn mowers, usually of the ride-on or self-propelled variety. Original mower engines are retained but blades are removed for safety. The sport attracts all ages, and is usually entered into in a spirit of fun rather than extreme competitiveness, though many do take it quite seriously.

The sport was actually "invented" in 1973 in a pub in Sussex in the UK, by a bunch of guys bemoaning the prohibitive costs of getting involved in any kind of motorsport. They formed the British Lawn Mower Racing Association, and shortly afterwards, a northern equivalent, in the shape of the North West Lawn Mower Racing Association was formed. The sport was taken to the United States by the makers of a petrol stabiliser called Sta-bil, who had visited the UK and witnessed a race meeting. It has since grown to have its own national organization called the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association.

Lawn mower racing should not be confused with go-karting wherein lawn mower engines have often been used, especially amongst the amateur participants in go-karting. Lawn mower racing is based firmly around the use of both engines and chassis from regular model mowers.

A humorous lawnmower racing arcade game called Wacky Wheels was released in 1994. It features various animals racing each other. There are hedgehogs and other items such as bombs scattered throughout the courses that when hit can then be used as ammunition to shoot at the other players.

Lawnmower racing was featured in the TV show Home Improvement.

Pillow Fighting

Every year at the 40th Annual World Pillow Fighting Championships grown men and women straddle the 'Slippery When Wet' pole and try to hang on for a title (mostly just hang on to the pole).

The audience always has a great time watching contestants slowly slither their way along the pole to the starting position while trying to keep their balance and holding onto a wet feather pillow in one hand and nothing but air in the other. If you have never tried it, it is harder than it looks. The Champions manage to make it look so easy that everyone wants to have a swing at it.

History

A well known Kenwoodian named Tom Rooney suggested that the World Pillow Fighting Championships be held in Kenwood at the 4th of July Celebration. A pole was made to span the Los Guillicos Spring Creek, the creek was then filled with mud and the Pillow Fights were ready to make history. The World Pillow Fighting Championships, now a Kenwood tradition, is now one of the most highly anticipated events of the summer. Since then the Pillow Fights have receive National and International recognition via television, radio and print publications. Folks travel from all over the world to take part in the pillow fight competition, either as a contestant or as sideline observers. Whatever their involvement, people young and old alike enjoy this now famous and unusual competition.

Rock Paper Scissors

Rock, Paper, Scissors, also known in Japan as Janken, is a hand game most often played by children. It was designed in Japan at the end of the nineteenth century and it was transmitted from Japan all over the world in the twentieth century. It is often used as a selection method in a similar way to coin flipping, Odd or Even, throwing dice or drawing straws to randomly select a person for some purpose, though unlike truly random selections it can be played with skill if the game extends over many sessions, because one can often recognize and exploit the non-random behavior of an opponent.

Various sports may use Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine which team gets the opening play (rather than a coin toss). Similarly, uncertain calls, or even the whole game in case of rain, may be decided by the game. It is also often used as a method for creating appropriately non-biased random results in live action role-playing games, as it requires no equipment.

Gameplay

The players count together to 3 counts, most commonly either using the name of the game (e.g. Rock! Paper! Scissors! or Ro! Sham! Bo!) or simply numbers. At the end of the third count, the players simultaneously change their fists into any of three "objects", which they then "throw" by extending it towards their opponent:

  • Rock: represented by a closed fist with the thumb resting at least at the same height as the topmost finger of the hand. The thumb must not be concealed by the fingers.Note: To accommodate different throwing styles, it is considered legal for the first knuckle of the thumb to point downward.
  • Scissors: is delivered in the same manner as rock with the exception that the index and middle fingers are fully extended toward the opposing player. It is considered good form to angle the topmost finger upwards and the lower finger downwards in order to create a roughly 30–45 degree angle between the two digits and thus mimic a pair of scissors.
  • Paper: is also delivered in the same manner as rock with the exception that all fingers including the thumb are fully extended and horizontal with the points of the fingers facing the opposing player. Use of the "vertical paper" (sometimes referred to as "the handshake") is considered exceptionally bad form.

The objective is to defeat the opponent by selecting a weapon which defeats their choice under the following rules:

  • Rock smashes (or breaks or blunts) Scissors (rock wins)
  • Scissors cut Paper (scissors win)
  • Paper covers Rock (paper wins)

If both players choose the same weapon, the game is a tie and is played again.

In International competition, the weapon is thrown on the fourth count ("1 ... 2 ... 3 ... THROW"). This is called "International Style." In "American Style," the throw comes on the third count ("1 ... 2 ... THROW").

Typically, the game is played in a "best 2 out of 3" match.

Tournaments

Starting in 2002, the World Rock Paper Scissors Society (WRPS) standardized a set of rules for international play and has overseen annual International World Championships. These open, competitive championships have been widely attended by players from around the world and have attracted widespread international media attention. WRPS events are noted for their large cash prizes, elaborate staging, and colourful competitors. In 2004, the championships were broadcast on the U.S. television network Fox Sports Net.

Professional poker player Phil Gordon conducted what he called "The World Series of Rock-Paper-Scissors" during the 2005 World Series of Poker in which 64 contestents of the WSOP competed in a tournament similar to the NCAA tournament.

Santa Run

The Running of the Santas is an annual holiday celebration event in Philadelphia where hundreds of pub crawlers take to the South Street section of the city dressed as Santa Claus. Begun in 1998, the event began to take a life of its own as three dozen Santa runners grew to several hundred by the mid 2000's. The event draws a significant number of Rutgers University Staff, Alumni and Sea Isle City patrons where some of the founding members once worked.

The first Running of the Santas was held on December 23, 1998. 40+ Santas arrived at Pitcher's Pub in Manayunk donned in red and white and pub crawled up and down Main Street. 1999 was the first ROS blizzard and in 2002 The Running of the Santas relocated to South Street. By 2003, the Run amassed hundreds and 2005 was a record turnout seen by all major TV networks and heard by Philly's hottest radio stations.

Liverpool Santa Dash

More than 4,000 red-clad runners took to the streets of the city for the 2005 Santa Dash Charity Run. Organisers are working out the exact number to see if the second annual Liverpool Santa Dash has broken the world record. The rival Newtown event, which is the current record holder, also had 4,000 plus runners for its race.

Both Dashes seem certain to beat the previous world best of 3,445. Independent experts are counting how many runners took part in Liverpool, after organisers collected every coupon.

Race Director Alan Rothwell said, "I hope everybody has given their slips in because that's what will make the difference. We're now planning an even bigger event next year. Everyone who saw how much fun it was will want to take part".

More than 4,500 people had registered to tackle the race, which was started by Blues legend Derek Mountfield in Castle Street. They should raise up to £100,000 for the ECHO Sunrise Fund which is supporting the Marina Dalglish Appeal.

Marina's husband, Kop idol Kenny Dalglish, said, "It's a great reflection of Merseyside that so many people turned out. Everybody who ran or sponsored someone is a star."

Mossley Hill teacher Bernie Murphy, 39 broke the tape, with a 20 second gap to second place. Among the ECHO's team were editor Alastair Machray, who finished in 42 minutes, and education reporter Jane Woodhead who has already run the London and New York marathons this year.

Wife Carrying

Wife Carrying (Finnish akankanto or eukonkanto, Estonian naisekandmine) is a sport of carrying women. Teams are comprised of a male and female competitor, however the female does not need to be the legal wife of the male. Teams also have the option to have the male carried by the female if they so choose.

Carrying methods often include the piggy back or firemen's carry, but teams are encouraged to create their own style. Experienced teams and all winners to date employ the more advanced Estonian carry, which has the woman upside down with arms wrapped around the man's waist and her legs draped over his shoulders. This frees the man's arms for balance and negotiating the obstacles. The team loses points if the "wife" is dropped.

The 278-yard course is built on the lower slopes of Sunday River Ski Resort. The first leg of the course is a gentle uphill run over a wide dirt and sand-covered path. A sharp left-hand turn then leads competitors into the first major obstable on the course, a water trough approximately three feet deep and 20 feet in length. Exiting the water, the course turns back toward the starting area and into a fast downhill run on grass. This final stretch include two log hurdles which much be negotiated before the final sprint to the finish.

The origin of the competition is based in Finnish history. A notorious 19th century character, Rankainen the Robber, imposed strong physical standards on men he considered for his band. To qualify, the men had to complete a difficult course with a heavy sack on their backs. It was also not uncommon for men to steal women from neighboring villages. The concept is a little archaic - but the modernized wife carrying event is all in fun, and in reality, is a true test of physical strength and agility.

You already know our Snack and Refreshment Tracking feature helps your team stay alert and hydrated, but you don’t have to stop with just drinks and snacks. All those little extras you’re used to carrying around — extra gloves, extra socks, extra ponytail holders — make that a rotating parent volunteer job with TeamSnap. You can also track who’s completed forms and more. Track it all with our Track Anything feature using simple tabs you can toggle on and off.

Overview

Teams Overview

TeamSnap is an online management tool for sports and groups that takes every possible aspect of team organization, simplifies it and makes it available to everyone. Manage rosters, communicate news and schedules, share photos and even collect fees through TeamSnap.  Available on your computer, smartphone or tablet, plans range from the low price of free to just pennies per team member per month.

Statistics

TeamSnap saves you time by allowing you to efficiently edit, manage and analyze team and player statistics.

  • Easily view stat leaders for goals scored, batting averages, you name it.
  • Capture every stat and easily create calculated statistical formulas on the fly.
  • Have full customizable control over what stats are tracked and in the order of your choosing.
  • Mark some stats private so they can only be seen by managers.
  • Find patterns, make improvements and win more!

Payments

Easily Track Payments from Your Team or Group

Accurately track your team or group fees and payments, and never have to wonder who hasn’t paid the season dues again!

TeamSnap allows you to easily view the roster to see who already paid and who needs a friendly reminder. In fact, having payments viewable by the entire team provides some subtle (but powerful) peer pressure to players who are dragging their feet on the dues. TeamSnap Payments is just one way we help save you time and headaches.

Photo Sharing

Share Team Photos and Files

Easily share photos and files with the entire team. Let everyone see the photo of the cooler of ice getting dumped on the MVP, let Grandma watch highlights from Janey’s last game, or send the whole team the off-season training plan at once.

  • Upload photos and files through a simple web interface and organize them into folders.
  • Display a thumbnail gallery for quick browsing.
  • View full-size photos with a single click.
  • Caption each photo and file, including a date stamp.
  • Share team photos from TeamSnap to Facebook or through a public link.
  • Add summer workouts, team parent policy documents, and other important team files.

Messages

Communicate With Your Group via Email, Text Message or a Private Online Forum

Email
Send emails to everyone on your team or to a few select folks. If you only need to email the coaches, you can easily choose to omit the players from the message. Every email you send gets saved so you can refer back to it or re-send it later to others. No more recreating emails every season!

Text Message
Last-minute changes or cancellations are no problem to communicate with TeamSnap. Simply send a text message to your whole team to let them know the change, or communicate with just a subset of your group, like volunteer coaches or team managers. It’s that simple for your on-the-go lifestyle.

Private Message Board
TeamSnap Messaging gives you a private messaging forum just for your team or group. Broadcast important messages, group updates or just funny stories on the group message board. The TeamSnap Messaging feature even has a tracking features that notifies you by email when a designated message receives a reply, and the coach’s or manager’s messages can automatically be sorted to the top of the feed for extra prominence. With TeamSnap Messaging, you can finally stop repeating yourself … or at least do it a little less often.

Refreshments

Refreshments

The all-important snack duty is a time-honored tradition in youth sports. And a parent forgetting that it’s their week is just as classic. With TeamSnap snack and refreshment tracking, you can easily coordinate halftime or end-of-game refreshments by delegating the responsibility and easily seeing which games don’t yet have someone assigned. The parent or player themselves can also edit the Refreshments tab with updates, like “Billy Bob is bringing chocolate milk”.

This is another place within TeamSnap that even displays the full game/event schedule with date, time and location, to ensure those snacks and drinks and are handed out on the right day.

But you don’t have to stop with just drinks and snacks. All those little extras you’re used to carrying around — extra gloves, extra socks, extra ponytail holders — can be made a rotating parent volunteer job with TeamSnap. Track it all with our Track Anything feature.

Member Availability

Know Who is Available For Events

This is the best RSVP tool around. Players can indicate their ability to attend each event on the calendar, whether it’s a game, practice, party or knitting circle. That way you can make lineups ahead of time, ensure you have enough players and make plans for the correct number of people at your events.

 "Yes, I will be there"

 "No, I cannot make it"

“I’m not sure if I can make it”

  • Players can add additional notes to their availability for each game so people know the why behind it.
  • Coaches can track attendance by viewing past availability for each player.
  • For coed teams, TeamSnap displays the number of male/female players for each game.

Schedules

Organize Your Team’s Schedule on the Web or with a Mobile App

The Scheduling feature is TeamSnap’s No. 1 feature because, really, who has time to color code their multiple kids’ team calendars with highlighters and hang it on the refrigerator door?

  • Let TeamSnap coordinate schedules on your phone and on the web.
  • Edit the date and time of the event, the expected arrival time, the opponent, the results, and even the location with a Google maps link.
  • List out your sports team schedule in order, or see it laid out in a calendar view to get the full picture.
  • Easily coordinate team events like practices, meetings, cake ball-making parties … anything. Great for planning and scheduling just about any team sport or group activity.
  • Subscribe and export your TeamSnap team schedule onto your own personal iCal, Outlook or Google Calendar and see updates instantaneously.
