Through the program, Mazda will recognize and reward outstanding coaches from local communities across the nation. This program was built to celebrate the coaches who make a difference in the daily lives of our youth athletes, on and off the field. 

The program officially launched today on Good Morning America, where Mazda recognized five exceptional youth sports coaches for the positive impact they make daily on their athletes and communities.

How does the PCA Coach of the Year program work?

PCA will award 25 Finalists and 10 National Winners from coaches nominated across the US who embody the ideal of striving to win, while also pursuing the more important goal of teaching life skills through sports.

Nominations may come from a school or youth sports organization leader, fellow coach, parent, athlete, friend, or family member. 

All National winners will receive $500, a certificate, and recognition on PCA’s website, newsletters, and media campaigns. 

The National Coach of the Year Winner will receive $5,000 for their school or program and an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the San Francisco Bay Area to receive their award in person at PCA’s annual Game Changer Awards & Benefit in May 2027.

Before diving into cameras, features, or live streaming tech, there’s another question youth sports organizations need to answer:

Who’s actually going to run your live streaming program?

It sounds simple. But in conversations with club administrators, we found parents and coaches are already trying whatever means possible to stream games. And without their club’s support, it’s usually unorganized and far less effective.

In one softball program, the setup was simply a family member’s spare phone hooked up to a hotspot. No fancy camera. Just whichever parent was willing to give up their phone for a couple of hours.

Another basketball coach purchased an expensive camera, worth the cost of “two cell phones.” The setup works okay for him, but now he’s stuck managing the stream instead of keeping score or coaching his athletes.

So before picking the technology, start with organizing the video and live streaming program.

How will live streaming actually work across your organization?

There’s no single way to build a youth sports live streaming program. The right setup depends on your organization, your teams, your venues, and who’s willing to manage the cameras.

But there are a few models already working across youth sports organizations.

Model 1: One camera, one team

The camera gets loaned out with the team’s gear at the start of each season.

One camera. One team. One person, usually the coach or a designated volunteer, is responsible for it.

This model can work well for programs with consistent schedules and a coach or volunteer willing to own it.

Consider this model if…

Your organization wants clear ownership and has a reliable coach or volunteer on each participating team who can manage the camera.

Model 2: Create a shared camera pool

Instead of assigning a camera to every team, the club buys a handful of cameras that rotate between teams based on game schedules.

As one club administrator pointed out, not every team travels on the same weekend. That means cameras can essentially be shared across the organization.

For clubs with a lot of teams but fewer overlapping schedules, a shared pool can make cameras available without assigning one to every team.

Consider this model if…

Your teams have staggered schedules, and your organization has a reliable process for distributing and collecting equipment.

Model 3: Offer live streaming as a club-wide perk

Instead of assigning cameras to specific teams, another option is to treat live streaming access as something every family gets a chance to use.

The camera and live streaming perk is offered across the club, then taken up by specific teams willing to manage it.

One club administrator described wanting to offer streaming “as a perk of being part of our club,” rather than something individual teams have to organize and fund themselves.

At the end of the season, cameras stay with the club and can be redistributed again the following year.

Consider this model if…

You want live streaming to become a broader member benefit without requiring every individual team to purchase and organize its own setup.

Model 4: Keep cameras at your venues

For some organizations, the camera doesn’t need to follow a team at all.

Instead, cameras can stay at one field, court, or pool throughout the day and be used by whoever is playing at that venue.

This setup can work especially well for multi-team tournament days or in-house recreational programs, where different teams rotate through the same space.

Consider this model if…

Your organization owns or regularly uses the same venues and multiple teams compete in the same locations throughout the day.

The best streaming setup is one your organization can actually run

Parents and coaches want live streaming enough that many are already finding their own ways to make it happen.

The bigger opportunity for clubs and leagues is to organize it.

Will every team have a camera? Do cameras rotate throughout the club? Will cameras stay at your facilities? And most importantly, who is responsible for making sure it all works?

Answer those questions first. Then start thinking about the technology.

Staffing is also only one part of building a live streaming program. Cost, technology, and access all matter too.

When your youth sports organization starts looking into live streaming, one of the first questions is pretty obvious:

How much will this cost?

But getting the answer isn’t always as simple as checking the price of a camera.

Live streaming costs tend to show up in several different ways, and many first-time buyers don’t fully realize what they’re buying. Some vendors add costs across nearly every category. Most charge some combination. And a few attach one transparent cost across the entire setup.

Before making a decision, look beyond the price of the camera itself.

Here are six costs to confirm.

Start with the physical hardware itself.

Depending on the live streaming system, that could mean a one-time camera purchase, a lease tied to a required subscription, or a buy-your-own-device setup.

6. Live streaming fees

Finally, confirm whether the ability to actually broadcast and watch games is included.

Some systems charge a separate fee for live streaming, different from what you pay for the camera or the subscription that manages it.

Don’t compare streaming cameras on one number

When comparing live streaming options, pay close attention to the combination of all six costs.

Ask what happens after a year. Know your usage plans. Separate what’s included from what’s optional.

Then get the total.

Once you’ve priced out all six categories for the options you’re considering, compare that number against your budget. It’s a better way to evaluate a live streaming setup than taking a single number at face value.

When it comes to off-season communication, Martie Wynn has big dreams and lots of great ideas.

But she’s also a realist.

As president of San Jose National Little League, Wynn knows off-season communication can be challenging. “Once you’re done with a season, everybody’s kind of burnt out,” says Wynn.
