Fun Youth Baseball Drills to Accelerate Development

TeamSnap shares a handful of fun youth baseball drills for coaches to try in practice or parents to try at home.

Fun youth baseball drills are a great way to help accelerate the development and growth of our young athletes. No matter if you’re a youth baseball administrator, coach, or parent trying to help out at home, these drills are a great way to jumpstart practices and skill-building in the backyard.

Here’s a list of four fun youth baseball drills….with video!

Fun Youth Baseball Drills

Drill #1: Clean Up Crew

The first fun youth baseball drill is called Clean Up Crew. Use a pair of connected zones (with practice cones) and have opposing teams of players try to clear as many balls into their opponent’s zone before time expires. This helps athletes get comfortable throwing the baseball overhand.

Drill #2: Four Corners

In Four Corners, we position players at every corner of the infield (catcher, first base, second base, third base). Players will be responsible for throwing the ball to their teammates in the directed order you, as a coach, choose. Rotate players in and out and switch up the order!

Drill #3: Mind the Gap

Use this Mind the Gap drill to help outfielders (and infielders!). Line up two groups of plates, with one line serving as primary players and the other line as backup. With a gap between the two lines, lob fly balls into the middle and have them practice communication and general fielding.

Bonus Drill: In the Zone

A fun pitching drill! Just one-on-one with your pitcher, line them up on their mound with you behind the plate. Challenge them to throw 10 strikes before they throw four balls, starting with about 60% effort. Up the ante with more strikes before four balls, or more effort.

Youth Baseball Coaching Drills

Youth baseball coaching drills, or youth baseball practice drills are important for our young athletes. And, making them fun is the best way to keep your team and athletes engaged. Use the above drills to help fill up your practice schedules or send them home to try with their families. It’s a great way to develop important playing skills (fielding, throwing, etc.) while working on teamwork, communication, and yes, having fun!
