Coaching football is no easy task, so TeamSnap has researched and developed some top tips for coaches. For all of the football coaches out there, either at the beginning of your coaching career or well in the mix of it, perhaps a few of these tips can help you out on the field. For additional coaching resources, be sure to check out Coaches’ Corner!

Here are our top 5 coaching tips for football coaches. Keep in mind that this article is for tackle football, but be sure to tune in for our tips for flag football coaches as well!

Tip #1: Prepare. Football is one of those sports where preparation is essential. The game not only has big rosters, but there are plays and intricacies unlike any other game. Do your homework as the coach and put together practice plans from start until finish. Consider the game the weekend before and figure out ways the team can improve and build from the work displayed over the weekend. Preparation also includes having the necessary gear and equipment to run the session.

Tip #2: Know Each One Of Your Players. With all different positions and jobs on the football field, it’s key to know the players you are putting out there. In fact, before you can decide who your linesmen are or who the best person is to run quarter back, you need to know your team. Take the extra time to get to know the players as people off the football field as well. See what makes them tick, be empathetic about their home life, and try and build a better understanding as to who shows up to the field every day. With that, you will begin to build up expectations for each of the players.

Tip #3: Lean On Other Coaches. Football coaches typically have a big team of coaches as well. If you are a head coach, but have other coaches on your staff that expertise in certain positions and plays, lean on them! Coaching is all about learning and developing, so be open to suggestions and work ideas off of your team of coaches. The way you all handle communication and conflict will be in clear eye view to the players.

Tip #4: Role Model Behavior.Remember that as a coach, all eyes are on you. Young players are watching what you are wearing, your body language, how you speak, react, and everything else. It’s essential that you think about displaying the traits that are an example of positivity and model behavior. One way you can make sure you are being a role model is to concentrate on your role as a coach, but also model fair play. Make sure your staff understands this too.

Tip #5: Communication. A football coach at any level, needs to have communication skills that go beyond just the giving of information. Communication also means responding to players and parents in an active listening role. Communication, both verbal and nonverbal is a vital skill as a coach. Work on establishing your own unique communication style and consider open communication as a way to set the foundation for your team.

We hope these five tips were helpful in your football coaching career! If you are interested in more football related content, check out some of the blog posts below!
